About Porto
Place where “every cell in your body” feels at home
Porto welcomes the world and does not close its doors to anyone. Even if you choose to stay only one night, you will feel like you would spend a lifetime here!
Situated along the Douro River estuary, Porto is one of the oldest European centers, and its historic center (Riberinha) was proclaimed a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996.
Its name derives from the Celtic-Latin, Portus Cale, and has been pointed to as the origin of the name "Portugal", based on transliteration and oral evolution of Latin. In Portuguese, the city's name is written with a definite article ("o Porto"; English: The port). Consequently, its English name evolved from a misinterpretation of the oral pronunciation and is referred to as Oporto in modern literature and by many speakers.
The famous fortified wine - Portwine - delights those who visit, and is known world wide as one of Portugal's most important export products.
